Our research approach
GCP‘s Phase II workplan builds on a set of seven focused Research Initiatives (RIs), supported by an integrated service component. The RIs are the vehicle for actualising our emphasis on product delivery, by building on products developed, achievements made and partnerships cultivated in GCP Phase I.
- Research initiatives: the vehicle for realising our emphasis on product delivery, by building on products developed, achievements made and partnerships cultivated in GCP Phase I. The seven RIs are crop- and crop cluster-, region- and trait-specific, aiming to demonstrate – through selected user cases of the service component – that modern and integrated breeding approaches can have a significant impact on crop productivity in developing countries.
- Research Themes: As GCP moves from the exploration and discovery that characterised the five years of Phase I into the project structure of Phase II that emphasises application and impact, in 2010, the Subprogrammes (SPs) that defined Phase I were phased out, and replaced with Themes.
- Research Services – the Integrated Breeding Platform (IBP): a one-stop shop for information, analytical tools and related services to design and carry out integrated breeding projects. IBP supports an initial set of eight user-case breeding projects, which include all the RIs above.
