The cassava community of pracitce (CoP) primarily aims to facilitate the routine application of marker-assisted selection (MAS) in breeding programmes and to develop relevant schemes that effectively integrates MAS with field-based strategies.
The CoP organises training and workshops for members, facilitates breeder-to-breeder visits and supports postgraduate students. Among other areas, CoP members have benefitted from workshops on data analysis of genotypic and phenotypic data through GCP’s support.

In 2012, nine additional countries were added, raising the total of African countries from four to 13. The nine are: Côte d'Ivoire (Programme Plantes à Racines et Tubercules, CNRA [Centre National de Recherche Agronomique]); DR Congo (Program National Manioc, (L’Institut national pour l’Etude et la Recherche Agronomique– INERA); Ethiopia (Addis Ababa University); Kenya (Kenya Agricultural Research Institute – KARI); Liberia (Central Agricultural Research Institute – CARI); Malawi (Department of Agricultural Research, Chitedze Agricultural Research Station – CARS); Mozambique (Instituto de Investigação Agrária de Moçambique – IIAM); Sierra Leone (Sierra Leone Agricultural Institute – SLARI); and South Sudan (Root/Tuber and Horticultural Crops, Research Programme, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Cooperatives and Rural Development).
